This past week took us to Milpitas where we first spent our first of our new stimulus money for Energy efficiency. With the help of another large turnout, we were able to tackle a sizeable list of repairs and upgrades including, Kitchen Faucet & Plumbing, Vanity & Sink Repairs, Toilet Repairs, CFLs, Shower Seat & Handheld Faucet, Grab Bars, Garage Door, Patio Door Screen, Vent Screens, Fence & Gate Repairs and several Energy Star appliances. Our host was extremly gracious and thankful and our group came away feeling like we made a positive impact...thanks everyone! Every once in a while we run across a homeowner who's energy level surpasses that of our volunteer group combined. Marilynn, the older sister of our homeowner Patricia, cares for her deaf sister and played host to our team this past Thursday...and in this case, was even more energetic than our homeowner. Armed with plenty of hugs, these two sisters made sure that each volunteer was paid in full! Three sets of half steps, 5 grab bars, energy efficiency updates, and a handful of added home security measures later (Patricia was recently burglarized), we were done. I'm sure our homeowner will sleep safer, but trying to keep up with these sisters has left us with the better night of sleep for tonight. Thanks ladies! This week's challenge was to install a set of half steps with a limited amount of space. As always, our creative group of volunteers designed a custom step system that not only fit the limited space requirements, but looked great. For those that have never heard of the term "half steps", it is an accessibility modification that takes into consideration the existing rise (height of each step) and lowers that figure by adding additional step(s). Most cases, including this week's project, this requires our dedicated team of volunteers to fabricate a completely new set of steps and landing. As you can see in the picture, they turned out great and our homeowners wasted little time trying out their new and much improved half steps.
